Description
"The ultimate app for Geography/Geology amateurs and professionals."

- Mel Martin, TUAW.com

What if you could hold all of Texas in the palm of your hand?

Geology TX is the Texas edition of the first GIS for the iPhone. It is a self-contained application (no Internet or cellular access required) that contains a vast amount of information about the physical geography and geology of Texas.

This release contains 29 layers, which can be combined in any desired way:

- states outlines

- the complete geological map from USGS

- terrain elevation

- bathymetry (ocean depth)

- USGS quadrangles

- quaternary faults

- older faults

- all earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 and above

- urban areas

- counties

- hydrology

- roads and major streets

- all train tracks

- all cities and towns

- active mines

- potassium/argon dates

- state plane zones

- UTM zones

- vegetation zones

- river basins

- aquifers

- public lands

- zip codes

- fire history

- ecological regions

- hydrological units

- named features

- mineral resources

- annual precipitation.

While this is a professional-grade tool, it can be enjoyed by anyone who likes to understand the world around them.
What's New In This Version?
The ability to download additional layers has been added - with 17 layers available, and more to come:

- geodetic points (48,143 points)

- state house and senate districts with links to each representative and senator's web site

- elementary, secondary and unified school districts

- city boundaries

- town limits

- American Indian areas

- landmark areas and points (9,500 total)

- railroad crossings (10,685 total)

- airports with link to FAA details page

- national parks boundaries

- FEMA floodable zones (premium content)

- historic land use/land cover

- original Texas land survey

The current position, zoom level and settings can now be saved in bookmarks, which can be emailed.

The Google Maps and web site pages are now built-in so you don't have to leave the app.

Two new built-in layers have been added: U.S. congressional districts with link to each representative's web site, and surface material.

One of the best apps of the year! I own the California and TX modules and I am anxious for when the Arizona module is available. I may even buy the NY module just for the glacial layers. For the amount of information packed into it, it runs incredibley fast and its interface is intuitive and simple. I tried to do the same thing for my Garmin 60Cx with a custom map and USGS data, but this is much more useful and powerful. Don't forget to rearrange the order of the layers for some interesting results. This is right up there with River Guide for Kayakers, Knot Guide, and iBird West
Finally a great geo app

I like the app -- we are visiting family in central Texas and this illuminates some interesting features of the landscape. One silly detail: the USGS quads are really useful. I also like the aquifers layer, water is so important around here.

What a cool app for geology. I look forward to getting some of the other states in the future. Just needs a feature to put your own POI (points of interest) and personal short notes on the map.
A simple way to find the USGS quadrant and the surveys. The meauaeeement tool and area calculation

I've had this app for a few weeks, and have really enjoyed it. A wealth of information is to be had on the state of Texas. Even a lifetme resident of the state like me, who was born and raised here can discover new and interesting facts. If you live in Texas or are just interested in our state, get this app. You won't be disappointed.
Cool quick ref for iPhone/touch

Version 1.2
Really cool quick ref, but working with this app on iPad (bigger screen) would make it even cooler. Many layers to download, some cost $$, like FEMA flood maps layer. But all extra layers are about $5. And there are plenty of free extra layers if u don't like spending extra $$$

The latest update includes a whole bunch of new stuff. The terrain is probably the most obvious (much more detailed), but there's also annual precipitation, zip code areas, etc... Well done.
