A strong dose of TD with a pinch of RPG

Version 1.0
The tower defense genre has arguably seen a good deal of growth and evolution with many significant new releases this year. Defender Chronicles: Legend of the Desert King is the latest, and in my opinion delivers a solid fixed-path TD game with RPG elements offering gamers a new twist that should satisfy many. Whether or not you’re into the fantasy medieval theme, the gameplay itself provides enough challenge and depth that you may want to check out regardless.
Defender Chronicles is one of the more visually beautiful games you will see. From the 5 beautifully drawn maps to the equally detailed defenders and enemies, the details and effort from the devs is obvious so you won’t be short on eye candy. One unique aspect is the 2D side view in which the game is played. Think of it an elaborate staircase viewed from the side. One minor issue is that you won’t be able to get a full view of the map, and instead, you will need to drag and zoom. However, this doesn’t impact playabilty by any means.
With an epic soundtrack conveying the medieval theme, each quest is briefly introduced with voiceovers and text which is well presented and shows the polish of the game. The text may be difficult to read for some, but the accented voiceovers help that a bit. An additional feature worth mentioning (because so many devs seem to ignore this) is the auto screen flip so right- and left-handed players should have no problem with headphone wires getting in the way.
The objective is to defend the General Headquarters by destroying enemies which in turn earn gold. The gold can then be used to upgrade defenders, and in the case of Defender Chronicles, victories that can be applied to RPG elements. An optional tutorial is presented in the first quest, but to a certain degree I wish an overview of the different enemies and bosses were also included for reference.
As the Hero, you command 6 types of defenders—warrior, archer, berserker, ranger, halfling, and mage—each with its own unique abilities and upgradeable. Your defenders will battle a variety of enemies including Gnoll Captain, Orc Chieftain, and Queen Goblin to the fearsome Wyrm Rider Duo, Awe Inspiring Giant Golem and Meat Chomping Slimeballs. You’ll want to spend some time admiring the artwork before you get started.
The maps—Great Sands, CloudPass, Marshwood, Breewich, Silver Keep—represent battles against the evil Orc Hordes and the rising Undead, which can be played in any of 4 difficulty levels: casual, veteran, master, heroic. In addition, there are 5 game modes – campaign, freestyle, extended, classic and classic extended. Depending on the level of difficulty and the degree of success in preventing enemies from getting through, stars are earned.
Casual—1 star
Veteran—2 stars
Master—3 stars
Heroic—4 stars
Additional stars are awarded for not losing any lives or completing a map without selling any guild.
Earning stars based on the level of difficulty opens the door to two things—Trade Shop and Great Library. They are unlocked once you succeed in completing the first two maps. With Trade Shop, items such as armor, swords, magical rings, and other equipment can be acquired to upgrade your hero. You can also spend these in the Great Library, which unlocks 8 secrets including an extra map, music and two additional defenders. It’s actually a nifty set up that many will enjoy fiddling with.
Defender Chronicles is a fixed path TD with specific build spots for placing defenses. Fixed path vs. non-fixed path comes down to preference for many, but frankly, each offers enough differences in gameplay that I think you shortchange yourself by focusing on one over the other. Defender Chronicles combines a solid TD game with RPG elements all wrapped up in a polished presentation. While the tutorial could use additional work to explain certain elements, the game itself presnets enough variety in terms of upgrades, unlockables and replayability that make Defender Chronicles a standout in the genre.
It starts off as fun but quickly turns into a grinding nightmare

Version 1.4.1
Well, this game starts off as fun but it quickly turns into a boring relentless grind that just plain and simply isnt rewarding. To be able to access the good gear at higher levels the cost are around 7,000-12,000 tokens per item (5 slots for gear: head/chest/weapon/2 jewelry). To break this down, you will get to a point where you cant advance any further on certain maps until you do a major upgrade on your gear, this requires grinding tokens at the rate of 20-40 per 3 minutes on lower level maps. THERE IS no challenge and very little reward, it also requires an amazing amount of time. So you can do the math and see how much time grinding it takes you to get just ONE good item when you reach the higher ranks and then you have a better chance of winning a real lottery then getting the item you want from the shop. The most frustrating part of DC is absolutely the horrendous shop system though(shop is where you upgrade gear). Basically there is 99.999999% garbage gear in the shop and .0000001% good gear. The developers claim items appear in your token range if you have the appropriate rank but this really isn't the case at all. You can have 20,000 tokens and one of the highest ranks possible and go into the shop just to see the majority of the items you see are absolutely pathetic low level garbage that not even low level players would buy. I grinded out 20,000 tokens which literally took forever and a day to get, repeating a same boring map over and over and over and over and over and over again. I then decide i want one good item and i was going to search for it until i found it! After 30 hours of going in and out of the shop (this IS NOT a JOKE, 30 hours!!!) to refresh the list of items i still havent found that item!!! You know whats pathetic? it's not even a really uber item, its just a pathetic shop system that will leave you screaming in frustration. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, save your money until they fix all the problems with it. Unfortunately they arent planning on addressing these issues, instead they will charge cash for In App Purchases so you can pay real money for good gear and tokens... YES, the designers of the game want to charge real money for tokens and uber items in game, i guess now i know why the good items are literally impossible to find BECAUSE THEY want you to buy them with real money instead of tokens you have earned in game. Seriously, avoid it you will thank me later... I have invested about 200 hours in this game just to kick myself and wonder what the heck i was thinking...AN ABSOLUTE WASTE of time and effort! There is NO REWARD IN THIS GAME...Just punishment! In time the reviews will slowly get worse when people gain enough levels in the game to see just how pathetic it really is... If you buy the game plan on spending another $50.00 on IAP's in game to make it rewarding, or better yet 300-400 hours for tokens to buy stuff, then another 300-400 hours of grinding the shop to find the items you want and need to progress. Rename this game TIME SINK CHRONICLES: LEGEND OF THE UNREWARDING GRIND Also, the developers say the game 'ends' for the casual player at rank 'heroic' but...the majority of the content and good gear is taylored to levels much higher then just heroic! Not only that the game isnt really challenging besides one map up to heroic rank! So to be challenged at all you really have to go past heroic rank (there are several ranks above heroic). They use the 'heroic = casual gamers end' as a crutch to justify the frustrations people are experiencing after they get past the heroic rank(which takes a few days to a week to get if you play daily).
Tired of ENDLESS Grinding

I like this game but I am SICK of ENDLESS GRINDING. The grinding never ends and with each update your Heros ranking is reduced and the grinding ahead of you increases by a huge amount. I am sick of it. For this game to stop sucking, the amount of gold and experience you recieve per battle needs to be TRIPLED AT LEAST. If you feel the same as I do, give this game a low rating until the developer STOPS THE ENDLESS GRINDING.
Very good but could be get some free items after a victory??

Version 1.4.1
Very good but a little too much grinding. Also could we maybe get an item here and there after a victory? It's hard enough to get enough tokens to buy good items.
Nice game but becomes repetitive and boring very quickly

Version 1.4.2
Visuals are great. Playing each world is fun two or three times. After that, things quickly get very dull. There is no character development, as in an RPG, except for token "hero." But it takes forever to advance your hero (by buying tokens) and you'd have to just keep replaying the same words over and over (and over) again to earn tokens. So, it starts off fun and quickly becomes completely boring. (I think they forgot about or ignored the last stage of game design -- keeping it interesting.)

Not many Applications on the Iphone cause me to lose track of time completely. Defender Chronicles is one of them.
Defender Chronicles stands out from a veritable ocean of Tower Defense Games. Two strong variants, 2D Vertical and RPG Buildup combined with sharp professional quality graphics really help land this as a Gem.
The 2D Vertical gameplay is an interesting twist, I couldnt help thinking of Donkey Kong when I first saw it. I enjoyed this twist and it didnt feel like I was playing the same old TD game.
The RPG aspect on the other hand, really sold this game for me. You have a "Hero" guarding your exit. This hero gains experience and Tokens(gold) every time you battle win or lose(more if you win). So there is actually a reason to replay, and a reward for replaying!!!
You can choose to make your hero stronger in his own stats or stronger in his leadership categories which boost the troops you place on the map. The Tokens are used to purchase items in the game, again, both to make your hero stronger or to boost the troops or give them special abilities.
The game is not super easy, you wont win with spamming one tower type or X combo, but actually requires some thought even for the basic "Casual" level. however Veteran,(the 2nd Difficulty level) is very difficult without obtaining some item upgrades or leveling up your Hero. Further difficulty levels virtually require you to upgrade your hero's level and items significantly before you should remotely try attempting them. 4 difficulty levels in total
Unlockables are nice to see as well, new unlockables open up with each map defeated.
Stars, each map is rated with stars for your wins. You get 1 star for winning at casual level, an additional star for each of the difficulty levels, so the Heroic(4th) level grants 4 stars as a base. on top of the base, if you beat that map without selling any of your armories, you get another star, and if no enemies make it past you, you get another. so ultimately 6 stars is the best rating you can have per map, with a perfect score on heroic on all maps.... the difficulty in doing that is insane....but doable with leveling your hero(extensively) and finding(buying) legendary items.
6 maps, means variety, with promise of more to come in a free update including ability to play orcs instead of humans. I can safely say, this app has earned a place on my homescreen.
I highly encourage you to purchase this gem.

Bought Star Defense and felt dissapointed. Didnt know about Defender Chronicles by then. After reading some topics in a board, i decided to buy this game. Really great game, fast, with action, great visuals, balanced gameplay and a twist in TD that changes de way you play. In other words everything that i hoped Star Defense would be (too slow, and didnt find the gameplay different from classic TD, the 3D is just a gimmick...). Right now, at least for me, Defender Chronicles and GeoDefense are the TD to go on Iphone.
Okay but way too repetitive

Version 1.4.1
Once you beat each of the locations on heroic you will have to grind at siria forever to get enough exp pts to make any progress and if you try to acquire tokens (at maybe around 30 earned on the longer freestyle level) you'll spend weeks trying to save up enough for any equipment that will make a difference. And then if you finally do make some headway, the legendary and higher level difficulty levels are ridiculously hard, making the replayibilty value almost nil. My advice, make the levels easier, greatly increase number of tokens that can be earned, and make item prices and stats fixed and always available so you know what to save up for.
Unbelievable!

This game is amazing! It is unlike any TD game I've ever played and when I got my iPod the first thing I looked for were TD games and I came across this game and once I played the lite version I was hooked! First game I bought when I got an iTunes card! Don't pass up this great game. Buy it! Buy it now! Or I'll get my rangers, berserkers, mages and hero to make you!

This was a 5 star app almost from v 1.0, with the updates that have come a long, each time the game has expanded and become more fun to play and harder to put down. With this game 'updates' mean so much more than a few bug fixes. It's been more like an expansion pack with every update and I hope that continues!
Addictive

This game rocks! Most of the other reviews sum it up nicely. My only two suggestions would be 1. More maps, and 2. Items that raise your hero stats should reflect in the stat window so you know they are actually doing something (maybe change the stat number blue or something so it reflects the stat was raised by an item). Hopefully we'll see these in future updates.

WOW! This game is incredible! It is the Must-Have new Fieldrunners. If I were going to give stars out, I’d give it six out of five. Yeah, that’s right. As much as I was looking forward to this game, it exceeded all expectations. I will go so far as to say if you are only going to have one tower defense game on your iPhone, make it this one.
